Why sector matters more than size
Two businesses with forty staff can need almost nothing in common. A solicitor's office and a distribution depot both have forty people and a phone system, and everything past that diverges: one needs recorded calls with a retention period and an access log because a regulator will eventually ask, and the other needs coverage across a loaded warehouse where a scanner must not drop a session halfway down an aisle. Headcount is the number suppliers quote from. It is rarely the number that decides what you actually need.
The pattern of the working week matters as much as the sector. Hospitality and leisure take their calls in the evenings and at weekends, which is precisely when a standard out-of-hours configuration sends callers to voicemail — so the default setup fails at exactly the hours the business earns. Schools run to a term calendar and are saturated in September and empty in August. Construction and field trades work from addresses that change every few months. Each of those is a routing and contract question before it is a technology one.
What we would not claim is deep operational expertise in any of these industries. We do not know your case management software, your warehouse management system or your practice software, and where a requirement is genuinely about those we would say so rather than improvise. What the sector pages describe is narrower and more useful: what tends to break, what the sensible starting point is, and which of the usual recommendations are worth ignoring for a business that works the way yours does.
If none of the eleven fits, that is common and not a problem. The questions underneath are the same ones — when do your calls arrive, what stops when the line stops, and who answers when the person who usually does is away.
