Does failover happen automatically?
Yes — the router detects the fixed line has failed and switches to the mobile connection on its own, then switches back when the line recovers. Nobody has to be on site, awake or aware. That is the entire point, because a backup someone has to activate is a backup that fails at three in the morning.
Will everything still work on the backup?
Phones, card payments, email and normal browsing will be fine. Large file transfers, cloud backups and video-heavy work will be noticeably slower and are better paused. It is worth deciding in advance what takes priority while the backup is carrying the site, rather than discovering the backup is saturated by a scheduled backup job.
Is this as good as a second fixed line?
No, and we would rather say so. A second diverse fixed circuit gives you full speed and a contractual fix time; failover gives you a slower service that keeps you trading. If your site genuinely requires the former, buy it. For the much larger group who cannot afford to be dark but do not need guarantees, failover is the better value answer.
What if there is no mobile signal in our comms room?
Very common, because comms cupboards tend to be in the worst-served part of a building. An external aerial mounted where the signal is good, cabled back to the router, resolves most cases. It is worth checking at survey rather than after installation, since it changes what the install involves.
Does it use data allowance we pay for?
Yes, and it should be sized for what the site would actually do during an outage rather than for a nominal figure. A distribution site running scanning and dispatch on a backup for a full day uses considerably more than an office checking email. Undersizing the allowance turns a working backup into a slow one halfway through the outage.
Can we use it while waiting for a new line to be installed?
Yes, and it is one of the most useful things it does. A 4G or 5G circuit can be live in days and keeps a new site or a relocated office trading while a leased line goes through survey, civils and install. It comes out when the permanent circuit lands, or stays on as the failover.
