What is the difference between a WAN and SD-WAN?

A WAN is the set of connections linking your sites to each other and to the applications your staff use. SD-WAN is the software layer on top of it: one place to monitor those links, apply traffic policy and enforce security, instead of configuring each site's hardware separately.

Can SD-WAN keep us running if a line is cut?

You can hold a disaster recovery policy alongside your normal one, each with its own priorities for bandwidth. If capacity drops, the second policy takes over and holds the line for whatever you have marked as business-critical, so even a fallback onto mobile data carries what matters most.
